How often should I visit the dentist?

You should visit the dentist regularly to maintain optimal oral health. Most dentists recommend a check-up and cleaning every six months. This helps to maintain good oral health and catch any potential problems early. Here are some guidelines and factors to consider:

Factors Influencing Frequency:

  1. Oral Health:
    • Healthy Mouth: If you have good oral health and no ongoing issues, a biannual visit is usually sufficient.
    • Gum Disease or Cavities: If you have gum disease, frequent cavities, or other dental issues, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits, such as every 3-4 months.
  2. Age:
    • Children: Regular visits starting from the appearance of the first tooth, usually every six months, to monitor development and prevent cavities.
    • Adults: Every six months to prevent and detect issues early.
    • Seniors: Regular visits are crucial as aging can make you more prone to dental problems such as dry mouth and gum disease.
  3. Risk Factors:
    • Smoking: Smokers may need to visit the dentist more often due to the increased risk of gum disease and oral cancer.
    • Pregnancy: Pregnant women might need more frequent visits to manage changes in oral health due to hormonal fluctuations.
    • Diabetes: Individuals with diabetes are at higher risk for gum disease and might require more frequent check-ups.
  4. Dental History:
    • Frequent Dental Issues: If you have a history of frequent dental problems, more regular visits can help manage and prevent future issues.
    • Orthodontics: If you have braces or other orthodontic appliances, more frequent visits might be necessary for adjustments and monitoring.
  5. Lifestyle:
    • Diet and Oral Hygiene: Poor diet and oral hygiene can increase the need for more frequent dental visits.
    • Stress: High stress levels can contribute to oral health issues such as bruxism (teeth grinding), which may necessitate more frequent dental care.

Personalised Plan:

  • Consult Your Dentist: It’s important to have an open conversation with your dentist about your specific needs. Your dentist can create a personalised visit schedule based on your oral health status and risk factors.

Importance of Regular Visits:

  • Preventive Care: Regular cleanings and exams help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues.
  • Early Detection: Early detection of problems such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer increases the chances of successful treatment.
  • Professional Cleaning: Professional cleanings remove tartar that can’t be removed by brushing and flossing alone, helping to prevent gum disease and decay.
  • Oral Health Education: Regular visits provide an opportunity to receive guidance on oral hygiene practices and dietary choices that promote dental health.

By maintaining regular dental visits tailored to your specific needs, you can ensure long-term oral health and promptly address any issues that arise. If you are suffering and need immediate assessment, book an appointment with the Sussex Emergency Dentist.

I have seen Dr Fahad Jamil twice now and he has been very gentle and reassuring. Both he and his assistant were very professional and talked me through what they were doing at all times. He also gave me very good aftercare advice. The clinic is very clean and modern and the staff on arrival are helpful and welcoming. Nobody enjoys going to the dentist but it was as good as it could be!

Dr Jamil extracted my son’s wisdom tooth yesterday. My son is deaf and struggles with communication, he was very impressed with Dr Jamil’s deaf awareness. So impressed that he checked whether I’d written this review today !! Thank you.

I was referred here yesterday to have a wisdom tooth extracted. The oral surgeon was Faizal Sameja. Lovely guy. I was scared and I was in pain with this tooth for several weeks beforehand. After the anaesthetic kicked in, the actual extraction took about 5 minutes, if that. He was so skilful and his assistant was also very reassuring. In fact it was so quick and I was so relieved I think I laughed! All the staff I met at this dental practice were calm, efficient and friendly. I was expecting to be in pain last night and today but I have only taken 2 paracetamol since.
