Caring for Your Teeth After a Dental Appointment

Caring for your teeth after a dental appointment is essential to ensure proper healing and maintain oral health. Here are some general guidelines for different types of dental procedures:

After Routine Cleaning and Check-Up

  1. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene:
      • Brushing: Continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
      • Flossing: Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth.
  2. Avoid Hard Foods: Immediately after cleaning, your gums might be a bit sensitive. Avoid hard or sticky foods for a few hours.
  3. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to help rinse away any remaining plaque and debris.
  4. Mouthwash: Use an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce bacteria and freshen your breath.

After Fillings

  1. Avoid Eating Until Numbness Wears Off: Wait until the local anesthetic wears off to prevent biting your tongue, cheek, or lip.
  2. Soft Diet: Stick to soft foods for the first day to avoid putting pressure on the new filling.
  3. Avoid Hot and Cold Foods: Your teeth might be sensitive to temperature extremes immediately after the procedure.
  4. Oral Hygiene: Continue with regular brushing and flossing, being gentle around the filled tooth.

After Tooth Extraction

  1. Control Bleeding:
      • Bite on Gauze: Bite down gently but firmly on a piece of gauze to help stop bleeding and promote clot formation. Change the gauze as needed.
  2. Pain Management:
      • Medications: Take prescribed pain medications or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed by your dentist.
  3. Avoid Rinsing and Spitting: Avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the blood clot.
  4. Soft Diet: Eat soft foods and avoid hard, chewy, or hot foods for a few days.
  5. No Straws or Smoking: Avoid using straws and smoking for at least 48 hours to prevent dry socket.
  6. Rinse with Salt Water: After 24 hours, rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean.

After Root Canal Treatment

  1. Temporary Sensitivity: Expect some sensitivity in the treated tooth for a few days.
  2. Avoid Hard Foods: Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the final restoration (crown or filling) is placed.
  3. Pain Management: Use prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
  4. Good Oral Hygiene: Continue with regular brushing and flossing, avoiding the treated area until it heals.

After Dental Crown or Bridge Placement

  1. Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods: Avoid eating hard or sticky foods for a few days to allow the cement to set properly.
  2. Temporary Crown Care: If you have a temporary crown, avoid chewing on that side and be cautious with sticky foods.
  3. Pain Management: Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers if you experience discomfort.
  4. Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss normally, being gentle around the new crown or bridge.

After Dental Implants

  1. Control Bleeding: Bite on gauze to control bleeding and promote clot formation.
  2. Pain Management: Use prescribed pain medications or over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
  3. Soft Diet: Stick to a soft diet for a few days to avoid putting pressure on the implant site.
  4. Oral Hygiene: Keep the implant site clean by gently rinsing with salt water and avoiding vigorous brushing near the area.

General Tips for All Dental Procedures

  1. Follow Instructions: Always follow your dentist’s specific post-operative instructions.
  2. Monitor for Complications: Be aware of signs of infection or complications, such as excessive pain, swelling, or bleeding, and contact your dentist if these occur.
  3. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and promote healing.
  4. Avoid Tobacco: Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products, as they can impede healing and increase the risk of complications.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure proper healing and maintain your oral health after a dental appointment. If you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact Sussex Emergency Dentist if you have any issues listed above.

I have seen Dr Fahad Jamil twice now and he has been very gentle and reassuring. Both he and his assistant were very professional and talked me through what they were doing at all times. He also gave me very good aftercare advice. The clinic is very clean and modern and the staff on arrival are helpful and welcoming. Nobody enjoys going to the dentist but it was as good as it could be!

Dr Jamil extracted my son’s wisdom tooth yesterday. My son is deaf and struggles with communication, he was very impressed with Dr Jamil’s deaf awareness. So impressed that he checked whether I’d written this review today !! Thank you.

I was referred here yesterday to have a wisdom tooth extracted. The oral surgeon was Faizal Sameja. Lovely guy. I was scared and I was in pain with this tooth for several weeks beforehand. After the anaesthetic kicked in, the actual extraction took about 5 minutes, if that. He was so skilful and his assistant was also very reassuring. In fact it was so quick and I was so relieved I think I laughed! All the staff I met at this dental practice were calm, efficient and friendly. I was expecting to be in pain last night and today but I have only taken 2 paracetamol since.
