Should I Floss?

Yes, you should floss as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. Here are several reasons why flossing is important:

Benefits of Flossing:

  1. Prevents Plaque Buildup: Flossing helps remove plaque from between your teeth and under the gum line, areas that a toothbrush can’t reach.
  2. Reduces Risk of Gum Disease: By removing plaque and food particles, flossing reduces the risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease.
  3. Prevents Cavities: Flossing helps prevent cavities between your teeth by removing trapped food particles and plaque.
  4. Reduces Bad Breath: Flossing helps eliminate food particles and bacteria that can cause bad breath.
  5. Improves Overall Health: Good oral hygiene, including flossing, has been linked to overall health. Poor oral health has been associated with various systemic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Proper Flossing Technique:

  1. Use Enough Floss: Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two to work with.
  2. Hold the Floss Correctly: Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers and gently insert it between your teeth.
  3. Shape the Floss: Curve the floss into a “C” shape against the side of your tooth. Gently slide it up and down against the tooth and under the gum line.
  4. Use a Fresh Section: Use a clean section of floss for each tooth to avoid transferring plaque and debris to other teeth.
  5. Be Gentle: Avoid snapping the floss into your gums, which can cause damage. Move the floss gently to avoid injury.

Alternatives if You Struggle with Traditional Floss:

  1. Floss Picks: Handy tools with a small piece of floss held taut on a handle, making it easier for some people to floss.
  2. Water Flossers: Devices that use a stream of water to remove plaque and food particles between teeth and below the gumline.
  3. Interdental Brushes: Small brushes designed to clean between your teeth and are particularly useful for those with braces or wider gaps between teeth.

Frequency:

  • Daily: The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing at least once a day to maintain optimal oral health.

Incorporating flossing into your daily routine, along with regular brushing and dental check-ups, is key to maintaining good oral health and preventing dental problems. If you have concerns about your dental health then you can book and immediate assessment with Sussex Emergency Dentist

I have seen Dr Fahad Jamil twice now and he has been very gentle and reassuring. Both he and his assistant were very professional and talked me through what they were doing at all times. He also gave me very good aftercare advice. The clinic is very clean and modern and the staff on arrival are helpful and welcoming. Nobody enjoys going to the dentist but it was as good as it could be!

Dr Jamil extracted my son’s wisdom tooth yesterday. My son is deaf and struggles with communication, he was very impressed with Dr Jamil’s deaf awareness. So impressed that he checked whether I’d written this review today !! Thank you.

I was referred here yesterday to have a wisdom tooth extracted. The oral surgeon was Faizal Sameja. Lovely guy. I was scared and I was in pain with this tooth for several weeks beforehand. After the anaesthetic kicked in, the actual extraction took about 5 minutes, if that. He was so skilful and his assistant was also very reassuring. In fact it was so quick and I was so relieved I think I laughed! All the staff I met at this dental practice were calm, efficient and friendly. I was expecting to be in pain last night and today but I have only taken 2 paracetamol since.
